Sketching in your notes helps retention, opens up new lines of thought, and utilizes both halves of your brain. Kate Hayward will lead a mini-workshop, with free lunch and coworking.
Visual Thinking, Sketchnoting
If you engage in collaborative meetings, brainstorming, or any type of learning – come hear about the Visual Thinking revolution. It’s similar to “mind mapping” – but different, broader, easier in a sense. Artistic ability is NOT required, and nobody need ever see your sketches. Veteran curriculum designer Kate Hayward has designed a full workshop that she SHARES to further the movement. In this 90-minute preview, we’ll:
- Learn how visual notetaking or Sketchnoting stimulates cross-hemispheric brain activity
- Increase our retention and understanding of the notes we take
- See examples of Sketchnoting used to facilitate group decision making and brainstorming.
- Practice skills that make rapid capture of ideas easier with simple icons and pictures.
- Cover a few drawing/sketching shortcuts.
- Get over some of your fear that you aren’t an artist.
This approach has been popularized by several authors lately, including Sunni Brown (VizThink) and Dan Roam (Back of the Napkin series). It’s also known as Gamestorming. Here’s a video featuring another book, one of Kate’s favorite sources of inspiration on the subject. And Kate’s blog contains some sample drawing tips and exercises.
Light lunch will be provided. Feel free to bring your own lunch, though.
