Friday, November 1, 2013: Usability Tools and Techniques

World Usability DayAs part of World Usability Week, Firecat Studio brings a Human Factors expert to share insights about creating websites, mobile apps, and other interfaces that are easy and intuitive to use. We’ll participate in an actual usability study as part of the session, and review case studies of projects that used emerging usability tools to optimize websites and other interfaces for users.

About the Session

With usability and user-centered design techniques, we can optimize the user experience for tasks where user goals and business value meet. Usability and research expert Dr. Gail Tomiak will explain what usability is and is not, and explain the insights and information a usability study can provide. She’ll also describe ways to measure both the difficulties users have with an interface and the business value of improving that experience. As part of this lunch workshop session, we’ll:

  1. Learn what questions and issues usability techniques can uncover and measure.
  2. Discuss ways of keeping usability tests neutral.
  3. Share stories about usability activities; when they’re most helpful, how they can go wrong, and advice for building support for including usability practices in projects and programs.
  4. We’ll also stage an actual usability test, so participants can get a sense of how the tests work, what they reveal, and how design teams use the information.
